It is not easy for anyone to identify the best ones FPS or first person shooter, for this reason we have decided to include in this buying guide the best FPS of 2021, among the productions of recent years and titles released several years ago that continue to be among the most played video games of 2021. First person shooters are distinguished from other shooters by their main definition: a shooter where the view is placed on the character controlled by the player; this component gives the gameplay total immersion, as well as ensuring greater precision in refining the player's aim and skills.
Since the days of Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake, progenitors of the genre, shooters have had gradual evolutions and, unfortunately, even short periods of stagnation. Ultimately, today on the market, thanks also to the proliferation of the independent industry and the hybridization between genres, we can also find titles that stand out and differ from the typical Triple A productions. In fact, alongside the usual annual Battlefield and Call of Duty we can find more cooperative shooters like Back 4 Blood or intriguing solutions bordering on roguelite like Deathloop.
What also distinguishes the best FPS of 2021 is certainly the gun play, i.e. the gameplay related to firearms: the actions and mechanics possible with them, the rate of fire and reloading, the secondary fire modes, the aesthetics of each weapon and even the speed of inter-change between weapon and the other are all parameters that greatly influence the gameplay of the FPS and which decree the preference of the players for more frantic and arcade like Doom or more tactical like Rainbow Six.

Far Cry 6
- Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC

Another historical saga to be counted among the best FPS is definitely Far Cry. Particularly, Far Cry 6 is the latest installment to hit the market, set on the exotic Caribbean island of Yara, a tropical paradise that appears to be frozen in time. Here the player takes on the role of a revolutionary who tries to overthrow the dictatorship of President Antón Castillo, played by the incredible actor Giancarlo Esposito (famous for series such as Breaking Bad and The Mandalorian). A prominent feature of each Far Cry, in fact, is precisely the presence of a Charismatic villain able to carry the full weight of the narrative on his shoulders. To accompany the story, there is a classic Ubisoft open world full of activities to complete, and obviously, speaking of FPS, and a gun play not bad supported by a good weapon crafting system… in short, you can even shoot entire vinyls while playing the Macarena!

Within the panorama of the best FPS, Deathloop surely it is one of the most intriguing and unconventional video games: the whole game takes place on an island in the 70s where a time loop. Back 4 Blood
- Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC

Another atypical shooter to be included among the best FPS is Back 4 Blood, a cooperative shooter where players face hordes of zombies, exactly like the more famous Left 4 Dead, a game created by the same authors of Turtle Rock Studios. Unlike L4D, however, Back 4 Blood differs in the addition of the PvP in which it is possible to challenge each other in teams of 4 players. The game also implements a mechanic from deck building whereby at the start of each level players can form their own deck of skills and abilities to modify different gameplay elements. Players are faced with different areas with many different types of zombies, and in some cases it will only be cooperation that offers a certain victory.

What is meant by FPS?
Not to be confused with Frames Per Second, a unit that measures the fluidity of images on screen in video games, FPS in terms of video game genre is the acronym of First Person Shooter, translated into Spanish First Person Shooter. It is a vast sub-genre of the largest and most generic shooter, where the first-person view immerses the player in a deeper identification. In games of this type, the weapon controlled by the player is an integral part of the interface.
FPSs were born in the West, initially created in university and military settings. Among the forerunners of the genre we can mention Maze War and Spasim made in the 70s, but they never reached the general public. The turning point came in early 90s with id Software, famous development house that created games for MS-DOS that have forever established the main characteristics of the genre: Hovertank 3D, Catacomb 3D and, above all, the one who is considered the progenitor of the FPS: Wolfenstein 3D. The first Doom also came to life from id Software, one of the greatest successes in the entire history of video games.
Since then FPS have undergone several metamorphoses and incarnations. Until the 2010s, for example, the genre was always characterized by armor that allowed the player to absorb a limited amount of damage, something that has been lost over time but has recently been recovered, in particular, with the battle royale subgenre. Even the aiming mode, to give other examples, has undergone more realistic changes over time: different types of weapons have more or less accuracy, while technology in the meantime has made it possible to use the same components of a game weapon such as sights, using secondary aiming modes for increased accuracy; such type of mechanics is called aim down sight.
Our pick of the best FPS
For the best FPS we had to make a choice that combined the new with the timeless, but we tried, even when it came to new releases, to include a good representation of both mirrors of the gaming market and gaming platforms. For our best FPS of 2022 we have adopted a definition of First Person Shooter trying to emphasize the main element: the first person view. However, the gunplay component was very important and significant for the inclusion of the game in this list: that's why video games that are certainly deeper than others on the list, such as Cyberpunk 2077 or The Outer Worlds, we have excluded them from this article .
