The Facebook Messenger app is an integral part for millions of Facebook users. However, you may face problems like Messenger not responding or freezing during a conversation with friends and family. Read on to find out why this is happening and how to fix the “Unfortunately Messenger has stopped” error on Android.

9 solutions for when Facebook Messenger video calls don't work

    1. Restart the app

Sometimes a simple trick like restarting the app can fix the problem for you. You can open the multitasking menu, close the app and then reopen the app and check if the Messenger app works.

    2. Update the Messenger app

Facebook frequently releases updates for the Messenger app to add new features and fix bugs. A recent buggy build may have messed up the Messenger app. The company quickly fixes such issues with app updates via the Google Play Store.

    1. If Messenger crashes on your Android phone, open the Google Play Store.
    2. Go to the Messenger app and update the app to the latest version.
    3. Once the installation is complete, open the app and (perhaps) you will no longer see the error “Unfortunately Messenger has stopped”.

    3. Exit the Messenger beta program

If you are part of the Messenger beta program to test unofficial features and keep getting the error “Unfortunately, Messenger has stopped”, then it's time to quit the program.

    1. Open the Google Play Store on your phone and go to the Messenger app page.
    2. Scroll down and you will see an option to leave the program.
    3. Uninstall the app and download the stable version from the Google Play Store.

    4. Clear the Messenger app memory

If you use the Messenger app a lot, it will consume an insane amount of storage space on your device. Sometimes, it may slow down the app's response and return the error “Unfortunately, Messenger has stopped”.

The Android operating system allows you to clean the memory on your phone. Here's how to do it.

    1. Open the Settings app on your phone.
    2. Scroll down to Storage.
    3. Select More apps.
    4. Find Messenger from the list. Touch it.
    5. Tap Clear memory from the following menu.

Now, these are many steps to perform a single task. Alternatively, you can long-press on the Messenger app icon and select the App Info option to go directly to the Storage section.

    5. Clear the Messenger app cache

A full cache can ruin your day. Each Android app collects cached data to remember your login information and other data to speed up browsing and the app opening process.

Clearing the Messenger app cache can fix the "Unfortunately Messenger has stopped" or "Messenger not available" error. Follow the steps below.

    1. Open the Settings app on your phone.
    2. Scroll down to Storage.
    3. Select More apps.
    4. Find Messenger from the list. Touch it.
    5. Tap Clear cache from the following menu.

As mentioned above, you can long press the Messenger app icon and select App Info from the mobile menu. It will take you directly to the information screen of the Messenger app buried in the Settings.

    6. Remove apps from the multitasking menu

If you're using an Android phone with only 3GB or 4GB of RAM, keeping multiple apps open in the background may not be wise. You need to remove such apps from the list and make room for opening new apps like Messenger. Open the multitasking menu on your phone and remove irrelevant apps from the list.

    7. Exclude Messenger from Digital Wellbeing

Messenger is definitely an addicting app. Using the Digital Wellbeing app, you can set the time limit for using the app during the day.

If you reach your Messenger usage time limit within the day, you'll see a gray app icon and won't be able to use the app. Follow the steps below to exclude Messenger from the app limits list. Here's how to do it.

    1. Open the Settings app on your phone.
    2. Scroll down to Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls.
    3. Tap the usage graph.
    4. Scroll down to see the Messenger app with a time limit.
    5. Tap it and select Delete from the following menu.

    8. Usa Messenger Lite

If the default Messenger app still gives you frequent problems, it's time to opt for the Messenger Lite app from the Google Play Store. The Messenger Lite version does not pack all the features of the Messenger app. In a way, Messenger Lite is a lightweight version of the Messenger app.

Have you solved the problems with Messenger?

Facebook Messenger keeps jumping up the popularity chart with each passing day. If you are still having problems with the app, please follow the steps above and fix the error “Unfortunately Messenger has stopped” or “Messenger is not working” on your Android phone. Which trick worked for you?
