Do you regularly watch videos posted online and would like to download some of them? To save videos to your Mac or PC, we have three solutions. Videos proliferate on the web. Sites like Dailymotion or Vimeo, not to mention YouTube, also offer users the opportunity to share their videos.
How to download online videos
But you've probably already had a lot of trouble trying to record some of the clips on one of those must-see online video services as on many other sites. Videos cannot be downloaded with a single mouse click.
They are usually streamed online in Flash Video (FLV) format, which allows highly compressed or HTML5 video to be streamed.
But all is not lost! In this article, we will talk about three ways to download streamed videos online. There are three solutions. The simplest way is to use an online service. You can also turn your Firefox or Chrome browser into an online capture tool or use more versatile software.
- All services contain terms and conditions under which it is not allowed to download a video for commercial purposes.
1. Download videos using an online service
One of the easiest ways to download videos is to use the OnlineVideoConverter online service. No software to download. OnlineVideoConverter works with a wide variety of sites that offer videos, including the YouTube must.
When you find a video you want to record, enter the URL on OnlineVideoConverter and click the Download button. Then click on one of the links. The best thing is that it offers different formats and can extract the audio or video track separately.
A competing service, Clipconverter, is just as easy to use and also works with several services. On this site, enter the link to the page containing the video you have chosen, then click the "Continue" button. Then you get a list based on the format and size of the video you want to download. NB ClipConverter can no longer recover videos containing music.
2. Download videos using a browser extension
Firefox and Chrome browsers allow you to capture online videos. This involves installing the Video DownloadHelper plug-in for Firefox or Chrome. The latter allows for downloading and archiving of videos from many streaming sites.
After installing Video DownloadHelper, you will see a new icon appear at the top right of the main Firefox window. Just click on it when you have the page where the video or movie to download is.
The pop-up window that will appear asks you to choose an action to recover the file as it is (FLV format) or to convert it to a more used format.
3. Download videos using software
If you are looking to download videos without spending a lot of money, many programs offer you the option to download and convert to another video format or just download audio only.
We will talk about just one program that is compatible with Windows, Mac OS, and even Linux: Kastorsoft's All Video Downloader. As with most free software, read the screenshots carefully during the installation process.
Once the software is started and installed, paste the video URL in the dedicated field and click on “Download” to start the download. In the lower part of the interface a drop-down list and a button allow you to access the advanced settings to choose the conversion format, the destination path etc….
To play your video, you must therefore download a video player if your conventional player does not support the chosen format or if you do not have the necessary codec to read it. The best known and most used is probably VLC, a multimedia player that directly integrates the codecs needed to read almost all formats.
In the end, if the three download solutions offered here are all valid, we prefer the online tool for occasional downloads or the browser extension if you need to record online videos often.
