Sony was one of the few companies to have compact top-of-the-range smartphones on the list, at least until 2019, when the Japanese giant decided to abandon this path and focus exclusively on devices with decidedly more generous dimensions, adapting mainly to the general trend of recent years and thus losing one of its most distinctive trademarks. Very soon, however, the situation could reverse again: apparently, the Xperia Compact line is ready to return to the market.
In fact, thanks to the well-known tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer, always a very authoritative source when it comes to announcing the arrival of new smartphones, renderings have been made available, in the form of CAD, of a future Sony smartphone, which should belong to the Xperia series. Compact. Given its size and supposed features, it may soon compete directly with the solution offered by Apple, the iPhone 12 Mini.
The smartphone would measure only 140 x 68,9 x 8,9 mm, data that would make it much smaller than most of the current top of the range and slightly larger than the compact solution offered by the Cupertino house. The latest Sony smartphone to offer a similar size was the Xperia XZ2 Compact.
The measures thus contained would be dictated by the presence of a 5,5-inch display with extremely thin bezels and of a small front notch. Considering the thickness of the device, it is much more provable that it can present itself to the public as a medium-high-end product than as a real top of the range.
Going to analyze the other alleged features, we should find a front camera, inserted right in the notch, with an 8 megapixel sensor accompanied by two rear sensors, placed vertically, with the main 13 MP together with the LED flash, while for the secondary there is no specific news yet.
The design would seem to reflect the good things already seen on the latest Sony smartphones and in particular on the Xperia 1 II and the Xperia 5 II. It is therefore reasonable to expect a fingerprint scanner placed on the side, probably on the on and off button, together with the volume rocker and the dedicated button for shooting.
It is also interesting to underline the addition del jack da 3,5mm, together with a USB-C port, located at the bottom which would also suggest the presence of fast charging. The audio should instead be stereo, with a speaker placed next to the USB-C.
Under the body, the implementation of a Snapdragon 775G SoC would have been indicated, not yet officially announced and presumed successor of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, used on several mid-range smartphones but also in some top of the range such as the Google Pixel 5. Inevitable therefore also the possibility of take advantage of 5G connectivity.
There is currently no other information about it, but what it is possible to imagine, also according to the various rumors chased in the past, is that the smartphone may arrive on the market under the name of Sony Xperia 1 III Compact. The launch is expected between the end of February and the beginning of March.
