Samsung Galaxy A71 is the new mid-range smartphone from the South Korean manufacturer. With the Galaxy A series, the Seoul giant is making its way into a segment where competition has become fiercer with the arrival of Chinese brands. As we all know, the photographic sector has become an essential element in the user's decision-making phase. Samsung knows this well and for this reason it has wanted to focus on this aspect since in 2018 it introduced the three cameras on the Galaxy A7 for the first time.

It is probably right there quad camera with 64 Megapixel sensor the real selling point of Galaxy A71. The Achilles heel, on the other hand, is represented by the decidedly higher selling price than the competition. In, it is available only in the configuration with 6 Gigabytes of RAM and 128 Gigabytes of internal memory at a price of 479 euros. Fortunately, as often happens in the Android world, we are talking about a figure destined to go down. You can already find it at lower figures on Amazon. As we have already said, the competition is great and the direct competitors are betting everything on the quality / price ratio that this product lacks. The alternatives that I could list are many: from Huawei P30 to Mi 9T Pro passing through Realme X2.

On the other hand, however, Samsung can rely on the brand loyalty of a large number of users. From this point of view, Galaxy A71 becomes the ideal choice for all lovers of the South Korean manufacturer who want a smartphone that is both complete and less expensive than the high-end proposals.

Design and display

Let's start with what I liked least aesthetically: the rear body. The photographic sector consisting of four cameras is housed within a rectangle in an arrangement that I did not particularly appreciate. The protrusion - albeit present - does not create any stability problems when we place the Galaxy A71 on a plane. The panel is made of polycarbonate with a geometric texture that - fortunately - hides the fingerprints that hold the back cover.

Despite the use of non-premium materials - such as glass - the sensation to the touch is that of having in your hands a well built device. The smartphone is neither slippery nor heavy. To the delight of many, including myself, there is a 3,5mm audio jack. In this regard, Samsung includes a pair of earphones in the box. Always a much appreciated attention that is starting to disappear.

Dimensions are important (163.6 x 76 x 7.7 mm). It is difficult to use it with one hand, but not impossible for those with larger hands than mine. The power button and the volume rocker are perfectly reachable. As already mentioned, the weight of 179 grams is well balanced.

On the front there is a large display 6,7-inch Super AMOLED with Full-HD + resolution and aspect ratio in 20: 9. The hole on the screen is inevitable, which has almost become a distinctive feature of the devices of the house in Seoul. As with the other models tested, it does not create any display problems and the interface is perfectly suited to the hole. Fully enjoying such a diagonal is a real pleasure.

We are talking about a good display with a more than convincing color rendering. It can be read perfectly in almost all situations, with some headaches during particularly sunny days. With a little more difficulty, you will still be able to read the content on the display. The biometric sensor is placed under the screen, but it doesn't shine in speed and accuracy. Similar speech for unlocking through face recognition entrusted to the 32 Megapixel front camera.

Performance and autonomy

Samsung puts its Exynos processor aside, opting for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 730 which - probably - represents the best mid-range SoC on the market together with its successor. In short, a guarantee of good performance. In the case of the Galaxy A71 it is coupled with 6 Gigabytes of RAM and 128 Gigabytes of expandable internal memory. In this regard, there is a three slot that allows you to simultaneously use the double SIM together with the micro-SD.

The chip in question is the same one tested on board the Xiaomi Mi 9T and Realme X2. I must admit that - in the case of the Galaxy A71 - the Snapdragon 730 does not give the best of itself. Despite the good performance, it is found some slowdowns and some blocks on the other hand, absent on competitors. Excellent heat dissipation that I have never perceived through the rear body. The audio is not stereo, it is guaranteed only by the speaker placed on the lower edge which reproduces an average sound. Complete connectivity that does not forget the 3,5 mm audio jack and NFC support, while the FM radio is absent.

Good news from the autonomy front. The 4.500 mAh battery with support for fast charging at 25W allows you to arrive in the evening without any particular problem. In my case, I managed to cover an entire and intense day reaching the end of the day with 22% compared to almost 4 and a half hours of active screen. Of course, the results change if - for example - you make an intense use of GPS, with services such as Google Maps, and camera. In general, we speak of a satisfactory autonomy.

Photographic and software sector

The photographic sector is the strong point of Galaxy A71. The smartphone can count on four rear sensors: 64 Megapixel main sensor (f / 1.8), a 12 Megapixel wide angle sensor (f / 2.2), a 5 Megapixel macro sensor (f / 2.4) and a last 5 Megapixel sensor. (f / 2.2) for the depth of field. A versatile and fun configuration that has managed to achieve excellent results.

I particularly liked the ability not to alter the colors much which while remaining alive give a natural effect. This also happens with the wide-angle camera where usually smartphones have a tendency to lose dynamic range. Macros are satisfactory as long as you can find the right point (between 4 and 5 cm) for perfect focus.

As it often happens, the result falls at night where there is enough noise with the colors that mix the scene. Luckily, night mode comes into play which enhances the scene by increasing the level of detail while not exaggerating the brightness. In short, we are not very far from the results of our direct competitors.

Videos can be recorded up to 4K resolution at 30 fps. Average quality for the 32 Megapixel front camera (f / 2.2), set in the central hole. It suffers a lot at night where the shots have a lot of noise.

Galaxy A71 arrived on the market with Android 10. Few doubts, therefore, on the future update to Android 11 (here the first list of upgradeable devices). The green robot system is customized with the One UI 2.0 graphic interface. The functions, therefore, are the ones we have come to know: one-hand mode, navigation gesture, video editor, the sidebar to quickly access your favorite applications and themes. Without forgetting Smart View which allows you to transmit the contents of your smartphone to external devices, such as smart TVs and PCs. In short, the usual software that lacks nothing at all.

Conclusions: who should buy it?

Galaxy A71 is a complete smartphone, which can meet the needs of many users. It enjoys a large and excellent display, a satisfactory photographic sector, an autonomy that does not give worries and a complete software. The only obstacle is the sale price of 479 euros, higher than that of direct competitors. With the physiological price drop that characterizes the Android world, it will become an excellent smartphone to take into consideration.

For the moment, there is a lot of competition to face the alternatives that present themselves to the user are many. We have listed them at the beginning: there is Huawei's P30 which, having arrived on the market at 799 euros, is now available on Amazon for just over 400 euros with a high-end processor and an excellent camera. Similar speech for Mi 9T Pro, currently sold at 435 euros.
