January 17, 2018 - Today Nintendo unveiled Nintendo Labo, a new line of interactive experiences based on play and discovery. Together with the Nintendo Switch console, Nintendo Labo kits provide everything you need to assemble fun cardboard shapes that, combined with Nintendo Switch technology, turn ideas into reality. * Nintendo Labo will be available from April 27 across Europe. The trailer “A First Look at Nintendo Labo” is available on YouTube.
With this new product, Nintendo, which has always been synonymous with innovation in the field of digital entertainment, continues its mission to bring smiles to people's faces. Nintendo Labo kits will allow creative minds of all ages to turn cardboard sheets into interactive creations called Toy-Con, designed to work with the Nintendo Switch console and Joy-Con controllers. From a piano to a motorcycle, to a robot and more, Toy-Con come to life when combined with Nintendo Switch. As you assemble the kits, you will find out more about the technology that makes them work and even invent new ways to play with the various Toy-Con.
Among the various Toy-Con available there is one that replicates a fully functional 13-key piano: once a Nintendo Switch console and a right Joy-Con are added, users can play the songs they prefer. The IR motion camera in the right Joy-Con detects which keys are pressed and plays the notes through the console speaker. Budding musicians will also be able to experiment with their own musical creations.
Those who have always dreamed of driving a motorcycle can build a handlebar, inserting a Joy-Con on each side and placing the Nintendo Switch console in the center. Then, just press the power button and give the gas by turning the right knob to start the adventure on the Nintendo Switch screen.
“Our goal is to bring a smile to the face of everyone who comes into contact with Nintendo,” said Satoru Shibata, president of Nintendo of Europe. “With Nintendo Labo and Nintendo Switch, players can discover new ways to play by giving free rein to their creativity. I personally hope that many users will have fun assembling the kits together with their families, with a big smile on their faces. "
With Nintendo Labo, creating and discovering is as fun as playing. Toy-Con's feature exciting challenges and varying degrees of difficulty, so each one is a unique experience. Assembling Toy-Con with friends and family, collaborating and sharing their experiences, is particularly fun. Once the Toy-Con is assembled, the most creative users will be able to personalize them with markers, stickers and paint: the only limit is the imagination! A special Personalization Set, which includes stencils, stickers and colored tape, will be available for purchase from April 27th.
Nintendo Labo will arrive in Europe on April 27 in two kits: the Assorted Kit and the Robot Kit. Both will contain everything you need to bring the Toy-Con to life, including assembly materials and software for Nintendo Switch.
With the Assorted Kit you can create many different Toy-Con, including the Toy-Con RC Car, Toy-Con Fishing Rod, Toy-Con House, Toy-Con Bike and Toy-Con Piano.
Toy-Con RC Car: By inserting the left and right Joy-Con into the toy car, you can control its movements using the controls on the Nintendo Switch touch screen. The Joy-Con's HD rumble functionality generates vibrations that make the toy car move in the chosen direction. The kit includes enough materials to assemble two toy cars.
Toy-Con Fishing Rod: The fishing rod includes a working reel attached with a lanyard to a holder that holds the Nintendo Switch console. To catch one of the many exotic fish shown on the console screen, you need to cast and unwind your line. Then, when you feel the Joy-Con inserted into the rod vibrate, it's time to quickly rewind the reel and gently lift the fishing rod to catch the prey ...
Toy-Con House: By inserting various assembled blocks into the openings on the sides and bottom of the house, you can interact, feed and play mini-games with a cute creature that appears on the screen of the Nintendo Switch console. The different shapes of the blocks are recognized by the IR motion camera of the right Joy-Con placed on top of the house.
Toy-Con Motorcycle: By inserting both Joy-Con into a handlebar, you can ride a motorcycle on the Nintendo Switch screen. Pressing the ignition button starts the engine, turning the right grip activates the throttle and tilting the body or turning the handlebars left and right controls the bike.
Toy-Con Piano: After you have assembled a cute 13-key piano and plugged the Nintendo Switch console and Joy-Con into it, you can create your own music by pressing the keys. By adding knobs of various types you can create new sound effects.
Toy-Con Robot: By assembling a wearable robot suit and inserting the left and right Joy-Con into the slots on the backpack and the headset, you can take control of a robot, which is shown on the TV when the Nintendo Switch console is inserted into its base. With the Toy-Con robot you can have fun in many ways, for example by destroying buildings and UFOs in the game.
