Red Dead Online: The Perfect Guide to Getting Started!

And now. The Wild West awaits you. The sun rises behind you and with your friends in headphones you are ready to dominate the Red Dead Online server. Or rather, you would like to do it, but you still have some doubts about the main mechanics and rules. It matters little if you are a single player veteran, now the game has changed and you have to be ready to duel until the last second. In this guide we want to show you all the most important elements of the Rockstar online epic.

Red Dead Online: Character Creation

The very first task in the game will be to create your character. You can define many aesthetic factors, from gender, ethnicity, age and many details such as the whistle, which you will often use to call your mount. It is important to note that it is possible to have only one character at a time within Red Dead Online: you can delete it at any time, and then start a new game.

Furthermore, during the creation of the character, the available customization options (as regards the clothes) are random: this means that it is possible to have objects available that, once the game has started, will be blocked after a minimum level request. It is therefore advisable to wear everything to your liking, as long as you can.

Finally, the attributes of the character must be defined: you can spend two points between Health, Stamina and Dead Eye. Our advice is to put at least one point on health, as you can do little when you are dead. If you are sure you are using Dead Eye regularly, it is also a good choice. Stamina, on the other hand, can be managed more easily.

Red Dead Online: the available modes

Once you have created your character, you will certainly want to dedicate yourself to some mission. Where to start? Let's see together what are the modes available so far within Red Dead Online.

Free Roam Missions and A Land of Opportunity

Alone or in company, you can head to the icons symbolizing strangers on the map to start a Free Roam Mission. Missions vary based on your honor. For example, if you are honest you will be asked to protect people from other players, in case you have behaved in a dishonorable way, instead, you will be asked to let a criminal escape.

Honor is also important in A Land of Opportunity missions, but in these cases the number of players required is at least two. The maximum allowed, however, is four. The missions are divided into several parts, so be prepared to struggle to win.

The Series of Rese dei Conti

Within Red Dead Online you will also find competitive modes. Specifically, we are talking about five different types of challenges that are part of the “Series of Accounts Returns” category.

The methods are:

  • Shooting and Team Shooting: This is the classic deathmatch with infinite lives. Before the time runs out, you have to get the best score. In the first mode, you play solo, in the second in teams. In the event of a tie, a tiebreaker will take place: the first to make a kill wins.
  • No waste: is the battle royale mode of Red Dead Online; you can only use the bow and a few arrows, or throwing knives. Obviously the playing area shrinks as time runs out, forcing us to act.
  • Hunting for man: Kills give you points and allow you to climb a ranking, but this means that by eliminating you, the enemies get even more points.
  • Hostile territory: the classic "Capture the flag" mode. Each zone under the control of the team awards points, but if all areas are conquered, victory is instantaneous.
  • Weapon of choice: both against everyone and in teams; kills give points, but in this case they vary depending on the weapon: the more complex it is to use (such as throwing weapons) the more points you get.

These modes can be accessed through the Player menu (left arrow, is one of the submenus) or through specific signs and signs in the game world.

Other activities

Obviously there are not only competitive missions, but also some single player quests that reveal the plot of the online mode. The horse racing: You can run in a fixed course, or from one place to another, or race through a series of checkpoints (fire signals). Furthermore, let's not forget that it is possible hunt and go in search of treasure. All these activities, as we will see later, are useful for earning money.

Red Dead Online: all the details on the bands (Posse)

The Posse are the clans of Red Dead Online. There are two types of bands:

  • Temporary cans: they are groups of up to four players, they are free and when the creator disconnects, the Posse is permanently eliminated.
  • Persistent Posse: they are groups of up to seven players, it is necessary to pay (200 dollars) to create them but when the creator disconnects, the Posse continues to exist. In addition, it allows you to keep track of statistics.

How to make a band (Posse)

To create a Posse, you must complete the introductory mission "Honor Among Horse Thieves". Once done, you need to go back to the field: from that moment the option to create a Posse is unlocked. Just press the left arrow and select "Create Posse" in the right submenu.

How to join a random gang (Posse)

It is possible to join a random band, if you do not have friends available, simply by going to the pause menu, selecting the item "online" and then on the item relating to the Posse.

This is a useful option for more casual players who don't want to worry too much about assembling a definitive gang and just want to roam the Far West with some unknown gunslinger by their side.

How to invite a friend to your gang (Posse)

Inviting a friend is pretty simple. After creating one, go to the appropriate menu, using the left arrow. By selecting your Posse, you will find the relative option.

Remember that you can only invite three other players if you are in a temporary Posse; if you want larger groups you need to create a persistent Posse.

How to play with a friend or Rockstar Social Club member without starting a gang

However, it is not mandatory to create a gang to play with your friends or Rockstar Social Club members. To join a session or to invite someone to your own just open the menu with the left arrow, go to the Players section and you will see a list of those who are in your session. It is also possible to do a targeted search.

Red Dead Online: How to Perform Fast Travel

The game world is very large and, wandering from one side to the other, it is worth finding a shortcut every now and then. Fortunately, fast travel comes to our rescue. To execute one, you must find along the streets of the game world some wooden road signs: they are poles, with an animal skull and the wheel of a wagon resting. These are however not indicated on the map at all times, but they are only shown if you are in close proximity to them.

Once you have found one, you must select it to open a list indicating the places that can be reached: each of these has, alongside, a price to be pay to activate the trip. Obviously, the farther you want to go, the higher the cost. It is also possible to reach your own camp.

These fast travel points are generally located near cities and areas of interest. It is worth remembering the position of the main ones, especially in those areas where we will travel more often. It is very important to note, however, that if your horse is carrying hides or carcasses, they will disappear during the fast travel.

Here is a handy list of some of the fast travel areas discovered:

  • Tumbleweed
  • Armadillo
  • The MacFarlane Ranch
  • Manzanita Post
  • Blackwater
  • Strawberry
  • Valentine
  • Colter
  • Rhodes
  • Wapiti
  • Van horn
  • Annesburg
  • Lagras
  • Saint Denis
  • Emerald Station
  • Your field (regardless of location)

Red Dead Online: how to earn money

As we told you above, there are various ways to earn money within Red Dead Online. It is important to put a few dollars in your pocket as everything costs and is not cheap: Whether it's weapons, clothes, horses or fast travel, you'll have to raise a nice nest egg. So let's see how to do it.

Cooperative missions

This is an extremely straightforward and simple method to implement. By completing co-op missions (either with a random Posse or with friends) you can get monetary rewards. You simply have to request a mission in the Free Roam menu (opened by pressing the left arrow). The game will join you with four other players (if your Posse is not big enough, they will be chosen at random) and you can complete a random Red Dead Online mission.

The reward can vary enormously, from $ 30 to $ 250: obviously tackling an initial mission will be worth less, while an end-game mission will give us more money. However, it is important to note two things: if you die and start the mission again, the reward drops; Furthermore, repeating a mission does not give us money again, but only experience points.

Treasure maps

As explained during the introduction to the online, it is possible to retrieve treasure maps. Unlike the single player, however, these are much easier to complete. To do this, just head to the indicated spot and look for a hidden box. In most cases, you receive between $ 50 and $ 100, along with some gold pieces and other salable items.

Currently, maps are obtained in three ways. One is received during the opening of the game, another when you reach level 10. Finally, they are obtained by invading the camps of the bandits: in this case it is important to keep the leader alive, as he will be the one to provide you with the treasure map. Additionally, there is a chance to obtain some by looking at the corpses of the bandits in the area.

Fur coats

Like the single player, it is possible to sell the skins of skinned animals. This is not a very profitable method, but for earning a few extra dollars while riding a horse to a city, it can work. We remind you, as mentioned above, that fast travel causes you to lose your booty of hides and carcasses, so beware. Also, using bows and arrows instead of firearms increases the sales value.

Horse races

Horse races are another method that is not too effective, but which may be of interest to some. About $ 50 can be earned in an hour. Missions are marked on the map with a black and white checkerboard flag mark.

Showdown series

Competitive modes also reward you with cash. Each round takes about ten minutes to complete. If you win, you get between four and ten dollars. These are not incredible figures, but the most skilled will be able to earn while having fun.

Money of corpses

Maybe for some it may be boring, but it's a good way to raise a decent amount of money, especially after eliminating a gang. Doing it while looking for a treasure map also allows us to kill two birds with one stone, or with a bullet, we might say.

Not just dollars, but gold as well

As we have already mentioned, in addition to dollars, the character can earn gold. Specifically, nuggets are obtained: one hundred of these form an ingot. Gold can be used to purchase cosmetic items, above all. There isn't much information for now, but it looks like the ability to buy gold with real money will be added at some point.

Red Dead Online: How Honor Works

As we have anticipated, in Red Dead Online there is an Honor system that will also affect the missions you undertake, as well as the behavior of the NPCs. The operation is similar to the single player, but the consequences change.

If you behave dishonorably, you will not receive a bounty and no areas will be blocked, you will simply be sought after. The lawmen will shoot you on sight to eliminate you, after a civilian, witness of your acts, will have reported your crime to them. The greater the number of crimes committed, the more reinforcements will arrive. Also remember that if you ride with someone who is wanted, you too will be automatically sought.

Red Dead Online: Your own camp

The camp is themain hub of the player. It gives access to the wardrobe, the creation of weapons and tonics, allows you to rest and make the quick trip, after having upgraded it. The position of your field, at the first start, is completely random.

Let's see what are the other possibilities inside the camp.

How to move the camp to a new location

You can move the camp by pressing the left arrow and entering the camp submenu. At that point it is necessary to select the size of the field and the new position (among those available in a list). Also, remember that two dollars must be paid to move the field.

Types of camp

There are two different types of camps:

  • Small camps: They can hold one to four players and cost a dollar of maintenance per day.
  • Great camps: They can hold up to seven players and cost two dollars of maintenance per day. Only Persistent Posse can have access to Large Camps.

How to activate passive mode

The field is also your safe place par excellence, in fact only there you can activate passive mode (formerly known to Grand Theft Auto Online players).

To do this, you need to open the player menu and select Camp: there will be an item called "White flag“; change the setting to raise or lower it. Remember that after lowering it you will not be able to raise it for thirty seconds.

Other functions of the camp

The base camp it is also the place where you will receive the items purchased with the Free Roam catalog. Alternatively, you can collect the package at any post office. You can also visually customize your camp by selecting a specific theme by speaking to Mr. JB Cripps. Also remember that it is not possible to pass the time by sleeping, but still you can rest.

Red Dead Online: The Perfect Guide to Getting Started!

Red Dead Online: discussion or contention

One of the main problems you may encounter is the presence of aggressive players who are more skilled or powerful than you. Rockstar thought about this problem and came up with a solution. After being killed or killed at least four times same player in Free Roam mode, you will have the option to activate one of the following two options:

  • Discussion: if it is selected by even only one of the two players, it prevents any conflict for ten minutes; it will not be possible to shoot or do any kind of damage to each other. However, it will be possible to hear the voice of the other player.
  • Contention: must be selected by both players; at that point it will be possible to activate a one-on-one deathmatch without others damaging us or our opponent. The player with the most kills in three minutes wins.

Red Dead Online: the skill cards

Ability cards apply various effects to the character. You get one for free during the first mission and by reaching certain levels; they can also be purchased for $ 50 per couple. The character has a number of slots in which to equip them, but the first (and only, initially) is the one related to the Dead Eye. Up to three slots are then unlocked for passive cards.

In this regard, it is clear that Dead Eye cannot slow down time as in single player. The cards give a different effect to this move: some highlight targets, others increase damage while still others allow you to recover some health.

Red Dead Online: Experience Points

By completing the missions you get experience points and level up. Be careful not to die though: if you are defeated in Free Roam mode, you will lose around 50 XP. Head and weapon kills (such as the bow) gain extra experience.

Experience points also level up skill cards. Slots are also obtained at level 10, 20 and 40. As you level up, new Dead Eye cards are also unlocked. Each level unlocks weapons, cosmetic items or even useful tools (such as the fishing rod): this does not mean obtaining them for free, but only that from that moment it is possible to buy them.

Red Dead Online: The Perfect Guide to Getting Started!

Red Dead Online: the horse

Horse insurance must be purchased during the introductory mission. Through this, it is possible to prevent the horse from "dying": your partner, in fact, will simply need time to recover.

If an uninsured horse is fatally wounded, you must pay to have it treated. If you have insurance, however, it is free. However, the insurance is linked to a single horse so it is better not to do it at each change of mount, but to decide which will be our definitive one. The cost varies from the quality of the horse and can go up to a large quantity of gold bars.

Be careful going through wooded areas with your horse: There are often bandits and wolves, which will put your mount to the test. In case it "dies", in any case, you can decide to immediately close the session, so as to prevent the server from saving your progress. If you were quick, you should find the horse still alive when you return. Also remember that you cannot take your horse's saddle off to put it on a tamed wild one. Finally, when you log in to the online session, you may not have the horse nearby: obviously just press the up arrow to attract it.

Red Dead Online: will the progress still be valid after the Beta?

Rockstar Games, through its official release, said that it is his goal to allow players to maintain progress after the end of the Beta. Currently, however, he cannot guarantee it. A beta of this size may require a deletion of data and online rankings at some point.
