How to stop signing in to Skype automatically on Windows 10

How to stop signing in to Skype automatically on Windows 10.

There are two different versions of Skype that you can use on Windows 10. One is the Win32 desktop version we've been using since Skype was launched. It has been updated several times in the past but it is still a Win32 app that you need to manually download and install on your system.

The second is the UWP Skype app which is already installed by default in Windows 10. The UWP Skype app behaves differently and doesn't have the same settings, which is why, if you want to stop Skype signing in automatically on Windows 10, you have to use a different method for each type of app.

App Skype Win32

The Skype Win32 app (skype downloaded from the official website and installed on your computer later) remains connected, even if it is not running. When you log into your Skype account, you have the option to stay logged in.

By default, the Skype Win32 app will launch with windows running. To stop starting the application, open it and go to Tools> Options.

On the General Settings tab, you will see two options:

  • Start Skype when Windows starts
  • Sign in when Skype starts.

You can disable the login and start the app when Windows starts or disable the automatic launch of the app when you start Windows but it will still let you log in automatically every time you start skype manually.

Skype UWP

The UWP Skype app behaves differently than its Win32 version and you won't like it. It does not have the two options that the Win32 application has. In fact, there is no way to prevent the UWP Skype app from starting when Windows starts. It will always be running in the background.

If you want to stop signing into Skype automatically in the UWP version you only have one option; disconnect. There is no other way.

To exit the app UWP Skype, click your profile picture on the top left.

Scroll down the small menu that pops up and you will see the Exit option. Click to log out of Skype.

The UWP Skype app will still run when Windows 10 starts up but this time without being connected to your Skype account, so when you need to use it you need to log in to Skype again.

How to uninstall default Skype UWP in Windows 10

If you don't like the choices the Skype UWP app has to offer, the only alternative is to uninstall the app and use the app Skype Win32.

To uninstall the Skype UWP app:

  • open the Settings app in windows 10 (press on start and the gear symbol)
  • and go to App
  • On the Apps & Features tab, look for the Skype app in the list of apps. Click and click the Uninstall button.
