Valheim: how to get iron

As specified in the paragraph above, you will have already defeated The Elder and collected the 'swamp key', the object that will open the doors of the swampy biome. To find a swamp on your unique map, pay attention to the dark patches on it - it is probably swamps. In addition, some can also be found interconnected with black forests.

The submerged crypts

One of the structures in which it is easy to come across in the inhospitable biome is the submerged crypt. Scattered along the muddy waters, they are easy to spot thanks to the green torches on the tiny stone building. Before proceeding, we recommend that you place a marker on your map before proceeding, in case you need to return. Interact with the structure gate, with the swamp key in the inventory, and enter the dungeon.

Now, all you have to do is look for a 'muddy scrap pile', or more depending on the size of the crypt; a clump of slimy-looking mud. You just have to pick the object, to get gods scrap iron. But the crypts are dangerous and hostile places: you will have to fight against the slime creatures, which will inflict damage from poisoning, and also against very powerful draugr (even in the areas adjacent to the crypts). Have you collected the scrap iron and are you unharmed? Go back to the foundry!

How to melt iron in Valheim

To melt the iron scrap collected in the crypts, you will need to feed the foundry with coal (coal), obtainable through the furnace. Next, place the scrap iron in your foundry, wait a bit and you will get some gorgeous ones iron bars to create your own weapons and armor. For those who have not yet created the furnace and foundry, here is the procedure, hammer in hand:

  • Forno a carbone (charcoal kiln): Equip yourself with 20 stones and 5 surtling cores. Place the oven spout down and forward. After building it, you can put wood inside it (up to a maximum of 25) to get coal (1 piece of coal for each wood);
  • Fonderia (smelter): To build the foundry, you will need 20 stones and 5 surtling cores. Like the oven, this structure will also be directional; so place it with the slide facing you. Now, place the iron on the left side and the coal on the right side to start melting it. 2 pieces of charcoal will be needed for melting.

In conclusion, to get iron weapons and armor, you will need tons of iron bars. So get ready to go back to the swamps over and over again. Now you just have to prepare yourself for the boss 'Bonemass'; click here to view our guide about it!
