Dr. Fetus Mean Meat Machine, the review of a game full of fun and madness

Dr. Fetus Mean Meat Machine has come to us, with all its load of fun and madness: this is what we think of it in our review.

Super Meat Boy is part of an old school of indie thought, it is no coincidence that we are in 2008: a brutal platform game, an intuition from a single author that produces a small pearl of platform precision and dynamism. Dr. Fetus Mean Meat Machine delves into that universe with a mix of puzzle and lightness, a gameplay that is inspired by Tetris, but that transmits all the DNA of Super Meat Boy in its essence, entertaining and engaging, creating a certain addiction. Colorful and gory enough, Team Meat's new game is a successful experiment and, finally, far from a procedural logic that the writer simply cannot make his own: each level is designed and studied to be exactly like that, like Mom made it. .

Four pieces of meat

Dr. Fetus Mean Meat Machine, the review of a game full of fun and madness
Dr. Fetus Mean Meat Machine is full of ideas, saws, traps that will always make you imagine a different strategy

As expected, Dr. Fetus Mean Meat Machine has no real beginning: Dr. Fetus wants to make a clone of Meat Boy and needs to experiment a lot. The game catapults us into the game in no time, teaching us the basics and leaving us free to experience our style. We like to go fast and the game responds very well to our stimuli: dropping colored meat blocks is a pleasure, avoiding traps is fun and the levels are completed quite quickly. The formula works precisely because it is very fast and easy to read: combining four pieces of the same color fills a bar on the left which, when a precise volume is determined, activates a condition on the screen.

A trap, an obstacle, a chainsaw that is located between the top and bottom of the screen and that will force the player to make certain numbers to chain their combinations, dying and dying. The game includes a control system which refers to a specific moment in the level, guaranteeing a Super Meat Boy feeling, gripping the player and constantly challenging them to try again. With a simple but brilliant idea, McMillen and his team have created a real drug in the form of a video game.

Traps everywhere

Dr. Fetus Mean Meat Machine, the review of a game full of fun and madness
Dr. Fetus Mean Meat Machine is long and full of specifically designed, non-procedural levels.

Moving forward is a pleasure: not so much for himlots of levels and incremental challenges, but precisely because of the desire to challenge the team's authorial madness: chainsaws, ghosts, traps, giant worms, buttons to press, lava tanks, electric shocks, even bosses. You've done well: boss! Each idea has a precise mechanic, but the execution depends on the player: the game design is excellent, the number of variables that put a spoke on the wheel is remarkable and in all this, the only great truth is that the meat blocks will go down, the rest is up to you. If you're good, a chain of successes will make you invincible for a few seconds, but the help ends there: Dr Fetus Mean Meat Machine is the ideal transposition of Super Meat Boy turned into a puzzle game, bringing with it a crystal. Clearly the difficulty, the flashes and the daring misadventures of innocent blocks of meat.

Technically we are facing a fresh and colorful product, but it is the sound accompaniment that gives great satisfaction, constantly pushing progress with a very healthy speed metal and sometimes shocking due to the absolute quality of the music. The only default, despite the difficulty, what is actually good is the absence of multiplayer: a shame, it would have been fun to face friends in the middle of the most intriguing levels.
