Guide Complete guide to Sword and Shield - Monster Hunter Rise

With the start of your experience on Monster hunter rise you will immediately have to make a very important choice, which is to understand which weapon you will want to use for the next hours of gameplay. In all there will be 14 different classes at your disposal, each with its strengths, weaknesses and particularities in general.

In this guide, in particular, we will talk about the combination of Sword and shield, specifying their various basic moves, combos, silkworm attacks and trading skills, along with some general tips on how to use them.

Furthermore, if the guide is not enough for you and you want the weapon in action, I refer you directly to Edivad video tutorial, one of the contributors from the La Taverna del Cacciatore Facebook page:

Basic commands

Sword and shield is a very strong combination of weapons in Monster Hunter Rise, although on the surface they seem extremely basic. While not having a large attack range, by combining their speed with high mobility you can always maintain a steady stream of damage on the enemy.

Another peculiarity of them is that they will allow you to use any object even while you hold them in your hand, thus eliminating the obligation to sheathe them every time, for example, you need to heal yourself.

Combo

  • Basic Combo: X (Slash) -> X (Slash) -> A (Slash) -> A (Return Slash)
  • Powerful Combo: A (Slashing) -> A (Return Slash) -> A (Rotating Upright) -> X + A (Rotating Reaper)
  • Stun Combo: Left analog + A (Shield Boost) -> A (Shield Boost) -> A. (Violent blow)
  • Charged Slash Combo: X (Slash) -> Left Analog Down + A (Charged Slash) -> Hit Monster -> X (Air Slash) or A (Hard Fall)

Attacks with basic silk silk

Sword and shield can also have 2 different Silkweave Attacks from the start, both with different cost and use.

Waning shadow

A silkworm attack with leap forward activated by pressing ZL and X. If the hit hits you will be thrown into the air, so you can finish the combo with X by making a stab to the ground, A by hitting with the shield or X + A by hitting with more damage in sequence. It will consume a silkworm charge.

Impeller

Pressing ZL + A you will swing the Sword with iron silk, dealing various damage in rapid sequence. The first hit will always interrupt the enemy attack. It will consume two silkworm charges in all.

Exchange skill

As with any category of weapons, Sword and shield will be able to make use of Exchange skill, or interchangeable attacks that you will unlock with specific missions after you have used it enough.

Two of these will replace basic attacks, while one can replace an Attack with silk silk. However, keep in mind that each can only substitute for some specific attacks, modifying the resulting move but keeping the buttons to press to perform it identical.

Sliding Slash (replaces Forward Slash)

A slide attack that slashes the enemy twice. The slide will make your hunter gain ground, but you won't be able to turn around while you do it. If during the slide you hit the enemy or execute the command perfectly, you can perform a combo in a row.

To perform the Sliding Slash you will need to press X and A simultaneously.

Drill Slash Combo (replaces Hard Basher Combo)

The Drill Slash Combo replaces the Hard Basher Combo and makes use of the shield. It is a multi-hit melee attack with enormous potential when combined with an elemental weapon.

Metsu Shoryugeki (replaces Turbine)

Metsu Shoryugeki is a silkworm attack that replaces Whirlwind. To make this move, which is a bit reminiscent of Street Fighter's Shoryuken, you will need to press ZL and A.

At the start of the attack it will be possible to execute the Guard. Executing a counterattack with the right timing will add additional damage to the enemy. It costs two silk silk charges.
