Pokémon Sword and Shield Guides - How to catch Calyrex, Glastrier and Spectrier

In addition to adding several legendaries from past generations, the “Snowy Lands of the Crown” expansion of Sword and Shield Pokémon will feature several unique legendaries never seen before.

In this guide I will explain how to get what is in effect the "legendary cover" of the dlc, that is Calyrex, along with his two trusty steeds.

How to start the Calyrex mission

Before facing the entire part of the story dedicated to the king of abundance, you will have to take several actions.

First, once you arrive in the Crownlands for the first time, you will have to face a fight with Peony.

It will only use two Pokémon at level 70, a Copperajah it's a Aggron, so using a Pokémon of the same level that uses Ground or Fighting-type moves shouldn't have any problem beating it.

Once this is done, go straight to the map and you should arrive in the cave where the Dynamax Adventures are held.

You will have to face one of them before continuing with the story, so continue with the dialogues until you are given the opportunity to enter the dynamax lair.

Once you have completed and captured your first legendary, talk to the Village Chief and finally reach Peony's house.

There you will be gifted with an explorer suit and you can begin the first mini-story of the expansion, "The deep bond between the legendary king and his trusty steed!".

The first contact with Calyrex and the choice of the carrot

Interacting with the wooden block on Peony's coffee table and inserting it into the Calyrex statue will cause the Legendary Pokémon to appear.

First he will challenge you to battle, though it will not be captured for the moment. Defeat him and start following his directions, which will involve you interacting with several NPCs nearby.

After you have talked to them, consulted the Village Chief and bought some carrot seeds from one of the characters in the village (it will cost 8 Max Rocks), return to the legendary Pokémon and, among the various options that appear, answer "Carrots".

At this point, Calyrex will show you two areas where you can plant the seeds you have bought, one covered with snow and one near a cemetery, both marked with an exclamation point on the map.

Based on which one you choose, you can get two different types of carrots and consequently attract one horse or the other.

If you choose the snowy area you will get the Algid Carrot, necessary to summon Glastrier, if you choose the one near the cemetery you will get the Dark Carrot, the favorite of Spectrier.

Traveling to Freezedale you will be able to face the steed of your choice in battle, although, as with the first battle against Calyrex, you will not be able to capture them yet. Once defeated, they will leave you a lock of their mane.

Curiously, after this fight, if you go to Freezedale's house and talk to the old woman inside, you can get a Cosmog specimen, so take advantage of it while you're there.

The final battle and capture

Returning to the story, at this point follow all the steps that Calyrex will show you and get the Bridles of the tie. All you have to do is go to the Corona Temple, place the carrot on the pedestal and observe the reunion scene between Calyrex and the steed you have chosen.

Now that both legendaries have reunited, you can finally face them in battle and capture them, so make sure you save and prepare the Pokéballs you want to use.

The battle itself isn't very complicated, but make sure you don't KO too many Pokémon on your team, as this will cause their offensive stats to increase and thus make them much more dangerous and difficult to handle.

Both Calyrex and Spectrier and Glastrier will be shiny locked, so don't waste time resetting the game as the color variants will not be available.

Some statistics and general information

Calyrex

Pokémon Sword and Shield Guides - How to catch Calyrex, Glastrier and Spectrier

  • Type: Psychic / Grass
  • Skills: agitation

Once king of all Galar, Calyrex certainly has a particular aesthetic, but the same cannot be said of the characteristics in battle.

No stats particularly excels, the Psychic / Grass combo gives it a lot of weaknesses, and the Agitation ability is quite situational, therefore making it very difficult to see this Pokémon as useful in any situation.

Fortunately, the Glastrier and Spectrier steeds arrive to his rescue, through the instrument Bridles of the tie, they will be able to join him in battle and make him extremely more interesting and powerful.

Glastrier

  • Type: Ice
  • Skills: White Nitrite, increases the attack by one stage each time you KO an opponent.

Despite possessing a type with many weaknesses, Glastrier is considered a very bulky Pokémon, with good defensive stats that make it well capable of absorbing blows.

As for offensive stats, excels in attack, also thanks to the help of White Nitrite who gives him a pretty good boost at every KO.

The only flaw is the very low speed, which could be an advantage for anyone who wants to harness his power under trick rooms.

Together with Calyrex he composes the shape Glacial Knight, which transforms its type into Psychic / Ice, gives it the ability Equine tune (which combines White Nitrite with Agitation) and increases all of her base stats excluding HP by 20.

On top of that, once joined, they will learn the Ice-type move Glacial Lance, which has 130 base power, 100 accuracy, and hits all opposing Pokémon.

Spectrier

  • Type: Ghost
  • Skills: Black nitrite, increases the attack by one stage each time you KO an opponent.

Spectrum counterpart to Glastrier, Spectrier is the second steed we can obtain in the Corona Lands.

Unlike the ice horse, its stats will be more focused on special attack and speed at the expense of defenses, thus making it very close to the archetype of the glass cannon.

Together with Calyrex he composes the shape Spectral Knight, which transforms its type into Psychic / Ghost, gives it the ability Equine tune (which combines Black Nitrite with Agitation) and increases all of her base stats excluding HP by 20.

On top of that, once joined, they will learn the Ghost-type move Astral Splinters, which has 120 base power, 100 accuracy, and hits all opposing Pokémon.

Calyrex in both forms, as you may have guessed, looks like an extremely strong Pokémon, and it will certainly be interesting to see how competitive players will be able to exploit its full potential.
