Hogwarts Legacy: How to Open Doors with Animal Symbols and Numbers from Arithmancy Puzzles

First of all, let's explain what the puzzles related to Arithmancy consist of, that is, the doors surrounded by a series of animal symbols, real and fantastic, like the one in the image at the top of the article. Using the Revelio magic two triangles will appear above the door. At each corner of these geometric figures there is a number, the icon of a creature or a question mark ("?" in the upper triangle, "??" for the lower one), while in the center of both there is a number written in larger characters.

Not very far from the door you will find two devices with the symbols "?" And "??". By interacting with the button indicated on the screen they will rotate the disk inside them, showing various icons of creatures. Each animal is associated with a very specific number.

To complete the puzzle you will have to calculate the number to replace "?" And "??" such that the sum of each corner of a triangle is equal to the number written in the center. Once you have identified this value, simply activate the devices near the door several times and choose the figure associated with the number you need.

And here comes the part that puts many people in difficulty: how to decide which symbol to use? It's actually simpler than it seems. Each animal is connected to a number, which goes by 0 to 9, and this association is always the same for every single Arithmancy door in the game. Specifically, here are the values of the icons:

  • Demiguise - 0
  • Unicorn - 1
  • Graphorn - 2
  • Runespoor (the beast a tre teste) - 3
  • Fwooper (the owl-like creature) - 4
  • Quintaped - 5
  • Salamander - 6
  • The unknown creature - 7
  • Acromantula (spider) - 8
  • Hydra - 9

The Arithmancy manual page

You can arrive at this solution in two ways, excluding reading this article. The first is to find the document "Arithmancy Manual Page" (the image above) in front of the Arithmancy Class. You can reach this place easily starting from the "Divination Class" fast travel point located in the Library wing. From here you just need to climb the wooden stairs in the immediate vicinity and continue until you have the opportunity to turn right. You will arrive near one of the Arithmancy Gates. The document is found inside a chest near the blackboard in front of the door. You can consult it whenever you want from the Inventory.

The second way is thanks to intuition. Looking at the doors of the Artimancy puzzles, it is possible to notice that the animal symbols that surround them are always arranged according to the associated number in ascending order, from the Demiguise (zero) at the bottom left continuing counterclockwise up to the beast with multiple snake heads bottom right (nine).

Now you have all the elements to solve the Arithmancy puzzles, but for the sake of clarity let's make a practical example in order to dispel any possible doubts. The image below shows the Artimancy puzzle near the Ravenclaw quarters. In the triangle above the number 13 is depicted in the center and at the corners the number 1 and a Spider, which as we know is worth 8. To calculate the missing number we simply need to calculate 13 - 1 - 8 = 4. Consequently in the device with above a "?" we will have to insert the owl-like icon. The triangle at the bottom shows the number 21 in the center and at the corners 13 and Hydra, which is worth 3. Also in this case it is enough to do a simple subtraction: 21 - 13 - 3 = 5, or the symbol of the Quintaped which goes inserted into the other device. Once you have entered the correct symbols, simply interact with the door to open it.

The solution to an Arithmancy puzzle

As previously mentioned, i Symbol values are identical for each Arithmancy door of Hogwarts Legacy and basically the method for completing the puzzles is more or less always the same. At this point all you have to do is use an effective method to quickly associate each icon with a number, in order to make your life easier every time you encounter one of these puzzles.

You could consult the image above (or this article) every time, but it's definitely impractical, or else count the symbols on the frame of the door starting from the left in an anti-clockwise direction.

You can also learn most of the symbols by heart with a really simple method, namely that of intuitively associating animals with numbers based on their characteristics. The Unicorn is worth "one" because it has only one horn, the Graphorn is a "two" because it has two horns, the Runespoor is a "three" because it has three heads, the Quintaped is worth "five" because of the number of legs and the the same concept applies to the spider which is an "eight", finally the Hydra has nine heads so it is associated with the "nine". Unfortunately the other creatures are linked to the various numbers for reasons of lore, but as they represent exceptions you will soon learn to remember them too. And that concludes our quick lesson in Arithmancy.
