Hogwarts Legacy: all the fantastic beasts, where to find them and how to obtain their materials

In this article we will explain everything you need to know to capture and breed the magical animals of Hogwarts Legacy and how to obtain useful materials.

Among the various extra-curricular activities proposed by Hogwarts legacy there is also the possibility of catching 13 species of magical creatures and then raising them inside magical vivariums in the Room of Requirement. In exchange you will receive materials to upgrade your equipment and, if desired, also a constant economic income.

In this guide we will explain where to find all the fantastic animals of Hogwarts Legacy and use their materials to upgrade your character's equipment. In addition, there are also chromatic variants of almost every magical creature in the game, a bit like the Shiny ones from the Pokémon series.

How to catch and where to find all animals in Hogwarts Legacy

You can only start capturing and breeding animals after unlocking the main mission "The Elf, the Sack and the Loom", during the autumn season. During the quest, the elf Tik will introduce you to the mechanics of capturing magical creatures scattered throughout the Highlands of Hogwarts Legacy and subsequently how to take care of them within the magical vivariums created by the Room of Requirement and how to use their materials to enhance your equipment.

But let's start from the basics, quickly summarizing the basic mechanics in case you weren't paying attention during the mission. In the Highlands of Hogwarts Legacy there are numerous tane that host different creatures. You will have no difficulty identifying them: in the game world and on the map they are represented with a paw-shaped icon. The best way to find them is to use the Revelio spell while riding the flying broom, in this way the game will point out all the points of interest in a large radius of action. In each burrow a predetermined number of specimens of the same species appear, both males and females. And with a bit of luck also some "shiny animals", i.e. creatures characterized by different colours, a bit like in the Pokémon games.

To capture a magical creature you will first need to equip the "Catch-all bag" given to you by Tik as if it were a spell. To do this, just press the right directional arrow on your controller or press the "T" key on the PC to access the list of all spells and then assign the bag to a slot of your choice. Once done, head to a den, approach an animal and use the bag to activate a short minigame in which you will have to suck it inside by pressing the keys shown on the screen. In some cases the animals will flee from you and since the range of the bag is limited in these cases spells such as "Levioso" or even "Accio" can be useful to block them and attract them to you. The exception is the Graphorn, which you will have to face in combat before you can catch it.

How to Find Shiny Animals

A Shiny Jobberknoll

As mentioned previously, a bit like in the Pokémon games, it is also possible to come across rares in Hogwarts Legacy chromatic variations magical animals, i.e. characterized by hair or plumage of a color different from the standard one. Fortunately, the chances of encountering one are much higher than in Game Freak games.

Shiny creatures are indicated with a special star icon next to their name, as in the image above. Apart from the different color, these specimens they have no other special characteristics nor do they offer any particular benefits to the player, so getting all the "shinies" in Hogwarts Legacy is a bit of an activity in itself.

If, despite everything, you are determined to obtain a chromatic variant of every animal (excluding the Phoenix, of which you can only capture one specimen in the entire game) what you will have to do is simply rely on luck and try until you succeed. Simply head to a lair of the desired creature and sharpen your eyes in search of a shiny specimen. If it isn't there you can try another den or follow these steps:

  • capture some specimens in the den
  • Advance time by opening the map and pressing the right analogue or the F key on the keyboard
  • Save the game manually
  • Reload your save

This way new animals will appear in the den and you will speed up the search for Shiny specimens. Animals such as the Graphorn and the Unicorn have few lairs in the Highlands, so this method is particularly useful in their case.

How to raise animals and obtain materials

Hogwarts Legacy: all the fantastic beasts, where to find them and how to obtain their materials
You will get a hippogriff by completing the main quest the High Fortress

Once captured, the animals will be stored in your bag and you can release them inside the magical vivariums located in the Room of Requirement. Everything is fine vivarium it can contain a maximum of 12 animals of up to 4 different species and initially. Initially you will only have one, with the possibility of unlocking others by completing the series of quests of the Tik elf in the Room of Requirement, the first of which is called "The Adventures of the House Elf", which you can face immediately after obtaining the access to the first vivarium. To be precise, here are the missions with which you will unlock them all:

  • First vivarium - main quest "The Elf, the Sack and the Loom"
  • Second vivarium - secondary mission "Foal of Death"
  • Third vivarium - secondary mission "The vicissitudes of the house elf"
  • Fourth vivarium - secondary mission "The Rebirth of the Phoenix"

Once inside a Vivarium by pressing R1/RB or the "H" key from PC you will release the animals inside your magic bag. Once done you can take care of them using the brush and feed (equipable from the spells menu) obtaining in exchange the materials, which we listed previously. You can repeat this process as many times as you want, but keep in mind that you will have to wait a few minutes before you can receive new materials from the same animal. To speed up this process, we recommend purchasing the magic formulas in Hogsmeade, such as the one for the Manger, which automatically feeds all the creatures in a vivarium without your intervention.

Also during the mission "The Elf, the Sack and the Loom", Tik will give you the magic formula to create the Enchanted Loom inside the Room of Requirement. Thanks to this tool you can enhance your character's clothes using animal materials, increasing their attack and defense or giving them passive abilities, such as reduced damage from certain enemies or increased damage for certain spells. In the second case you can unlock new features by liberating the bandit camps scattered across the Highlands.

Hogwarts Legacy: all the fantastic beasts, where to find them and how to obtain their materials

You are not obliged to take care of your animals to obtain the necessary materials, since you can also purchase them at the "Fair of Fairs" shop in Hogsmeade, but on the other hand this requires a large investment of money and generally the least efficient method .

If you want you can also do it mate two animals of the species after completing the "Death Colt" side quest. To do this you will have to build a Breeding Enclosure with transfiguration and assign a Breeding Pen to the vivarium of your interest. At this point all you have to do is choose the two animals to mate, obviously a male and a female of the same species, and wait 30 real minutes for a new creature to be born.

On our pages you will also find the guide on how to obtain Avada Kedavra and the other Unforgivable Curses, how to complete the Arithmancy puzzles of the doors with numbers and animal symbols, where to find all the Demiguise statuettes and where to find all the Daedalus keys.
